Barbara Bromhead-Wragg

Photography and print

I focus the majority of my photography on flora & fauna in and around my Black Mountains gardens, recording visiting and resident wildlife. I enjoy the conversations my work generates, sharing tips & encouraging an awareness of the importance of the natural world around us.

I use my own, unaltered, photography – “you see what I saw” - to produce traditional prints as well as handmade 'Bookmark' cards; each card has a trio of images and are designed to be re-used as a bookmark, (all cards are blank for the customer's own message).

Combining my photographs with the dye-sublimation printing method, (which in itself is rather an addictive process!) I also create my own unique range of gifts.

Working from home, I create small batches of dining art, coasters and other items. Each piece can vary slightly in colour or design due to the single item production, plus variables of placement, heat and time.

From dining art to my bookmark cards, I enjoy producing items that are practical as well as aesthetically pleasing.

By focusing on my garden, I seek to encourage others to think what they could see in their own gardens, whether sowing flowers for bees & other insects or feeding birds and/or wildlife – even a simple wildlife patch in the garden creates space for nature.

Flowers, birds, butterflies or more; what wildlife - furry, feathered or scaled - do you see or would wish to see in your garden?

I’ve had a lifelong love of landscape and photography, the latter especially being encouraged from a young age by my father; I can’t remember a time without a camera in my hand.

I trained in Fine Art Painting, Printmaking & Photography as a mature student. After graduating in 2003, I worked and exhibited with, amongst others, the Sidney Nolan Trust. Turner and Monet are my two main influences; light and colour are therefore very important. I might also admit to the odd moment of whimsy!

It was a move to the Black Mountains in 2010 that shifted my focus back to my first love of photography, initially to record the multitude of wild flowers in the area; a personal project with links to my maternal grandmother. This initial exploration quickly grew to encompass other treasures found & visiting within and around my gardens.

Living in such a beautiful area defined my purpose further, to remind viewers of the variety of life sharing this world with us and to promote what we can do to share our gardens and spaces with nature.

How do we save a landscape? Bit by bit...& garden by garden is a great start – eventually all these ‘bits’ join up!
